I think it would be a good idea starting the film again with Ellie's narration, she tells the audience what's happening and maybe using her voiceover in a couple of scenes they can show Chris is becoming a loner and have some shots of him writing on his notebook, sitting away from them during their meetings just to set up his change. It could work, because I can see the film starting with Ellie recording their story and the cut to their first meeting.
